The July Writing Challenge begins here!
The Gens to be used for this challenge are: the Plot, Archetype, and Plot Device Gens.
The objective of the challenge is to use the aforementioned Gens and turn their results into a short story between 5,000 and 10,000 words (about 6 – 11 pages). The specifications are as follows:
Plot Gen (Free use): You may generate as many results as you like and use any ONE that you are happy with as the plot for your story. You may use Premise, Detailed, or Complete plot results.
You may NOT edit plots or mix-and-match plots.
Archetype Gen (Semi-restricted): Use this Gen to produce up to THREE possible archetypes, then choose ONE of three to use in your story. This character can be your main character, a secondary character, the antagonist; the choice is up to you as long as they are featured in your story somewhere; the more, the better.
You may NOT generate any more than THREE archetypes; once your three chances have been used, that’s it; you have to choose from one of the three characters, no matter how crazy or inappropriate they all may be!
Plot Device (Optional, Free use): Use this Gen if you wish to add an extra element to your story. You may use as many plot devices as you like.
And so, the challenge is to write a story using your chosen plot, featuring one of the possible three archetypes, and optionally, one or more plot devices. Writing can be continued until the 22nd of July. Stories can be submitted at any point between the 1st and the 25th. You can do more than one story if you want.
Send your stories to RanGen HERE (please don’t send them as attachments; put the story in the body of the email), and write your name (it doesn’t need to be your real name) and “July Writing Challenge” in the subject line. If you’re having trouble sending long stories in one email, split it in two and clearly mark both as part 1 and part 2.
Be sure to include with your story the results of all the generators; the plot you went with, the THREE archetypes you were provided with, and any plot devices that were generated!
After the 25th, the stories will be made available to read on the site and the winners will be selected and announced on the site.
If you have any questions or comments, don’t forget you can contact me for that too. For those taking part in this writing challenge, good luck; you may well need it…
