The February Writing Challenge

We’re getting back into the swing of things, and are nicely warmed up from last month’s challenge. Now, we’re ready for something a little trickier. The theme of this month’s challenge is RELATIONSHIPS, and there are strict restrictions in place for the rules.
The Gens you’ll be using for this challenge are the Journey, First Encounter, and City Gens.

The objective of the challenge is to use the aforementioned Gens and turn their results into a short story of at least 10,000 words before the end of the month.

Use the Journey and First Encounter to establish the who and the why, and the City Gen to determine the where. Where does this journey start, where does it end, and what happens along the way? How does the relationship of the characters change by the end of the story? Do they make it to their destination? Is it a good ending, or a bad one? We shall see.

The challenge specifications are as follows:

Journey Gen (Restricted rolls x3): Use this Gen to determine the main focal point of the story. Your character needs to get from A to B. You may choose whatever options you wish for the journey settings before you roll (method, length, delays, etc.).

First Encounter Gen (Restricted rolls x3): Use this Gen to determine how/why your 2 or more characters come together, either at the beginning of the journey or partway through. The characters can start as complete strangers, or may vaguely know of each other (i.e work colleagues, a frequently seen store assistant), but should not have a deep relationship from the beginning.

City Gen (Restricted rolls x3): Use this Gen to produce a specific location for your story. It can be used as the starting city, a city they pass through along the way, or a city they are trying to get to.

For each of the above Gens, the following ruleset applies:

Restricted rolls x3: Roll 3 times then choose from 1 of the 3 sets of generated results.

  • Do not mix and match results from the different rolls.
  • Do not change the results.
  • Do not ignore the generated details; try to use as much of them as you can.
  • You may add additional details to fill in important gaps.
  • Use the Detailed option where applicable. Choose whatever options you like.
  • You can also use results from any other Gen as you wish, as long as they don’t change your existing details. Existing details from these Gens override details from additional Gens.

Important: Make a copy/screenshot of the results from each of your three rolls so you can view them and decide which one you like; there is no option to re-display an old roll, so once you press the Generate button again, the previous one is GONE!

Submitting your story:

Be sure to include the generated results where possible so that we can see what you were working with. Please include a name with your story (real or a username) and age (or age range), and let me know if you’re happy for me to share/quote your story. (Your story belongs to you though; I’m not going to run off with it! :D)

You must mention if your story is NSFW or if it includes sensitive themes or gore/violence, etc. Give your story an age rating if necessary!

Sharing your story:

Upload your story to your preferred service then share the URL. Post the link on your social media accounts and include the hashtag #RangenWritingChallenge, so the world can read your story! Don’t forget to tag me!
