The May ’23 Writing Challenge

Unexpected obstacles at every turn, an unplanned pregnancy at a critical time, and a group of companions who clash at every moment…sometimes the greatest adventures are the ones you never planned for.

This time around, the focus is on how situations turn out when things don’t go as expected, either slightly, or completely. The challenge’s objective is to use the Murphy’s Law, Personality, and Pregnancy Gens and turn the results into a short story of at least 10,000 words before the end of the month.

Murphy’s Law Gen (Restricted): Use this Gen to add the primary sources of conflict to your story. You can use as many events as you like, negative or mixed, from any genre. Do not use Positive events.

Personality Gen (Restricted): Use this Gen to give a personality to your characters. It can be for any character with a significant role in the story. For each new character roll once and use the first result it gives you; do NOT reroll.

Pregnancy Gen(Restricted): Use this Gen to introduce new characters or change existing characters’ lives and relationships. You can focus on the birth of the child and who or what they will become, or you can focus on the trials and changes of the pregnancy itself. Set the Number of Babies to random, then use whatever pregnancy it generates first (unless it says there is no pregnancy at this time, in which case reroll until the pregnancy is successful.)

The challenge specifications are as follows:

Specific results: Use the specific prompts provided above.

  • Do not change the results.
  • Do not ignore the generated details; you must include the main details; try to use as much of the rest as you can.
  • You may add additional details to fill in important gaps.
  • You can also use results from any other Gen as you wish, as long as they don’t change your existing details. Existing details from these Gens override details from additional Gens.

With these settings, can you write a story based on your results?

Submitting your story:

Be sure to include the generated results where possible so that we can see what you were working with. Please include a name with your story (real or a username) and age (or age range), and let me know if you’re happy for me to share/quote your story. (Your story belongs to you though; I’m not going to run off with it! :D)

You must mention whether your story is NSFW or includes sensitive themes, gore/violence, etc. Give your story an age rating if necessary!

Sharing your story:

Upload your story to your preferred service then share the URL. Post the link on your social media accounts and include the hashtag #RangenWritingChallenge, so the world can read your story! Don’t forget to tag me!
